Explore Life in Bruges during the 19th and early 20th centuries
Volkskundemuseum

Step back in time and experience the everyday life of Bruges residents during the 19th and early 20th centuries at the Folk Museum (Volkskundemuseum in Dutch).

As you walk through the museum, you’ll feel as though time has stood still, with authentic recreations of an old classroom, pharmacy, tailor’s workshop, confectionery store, and grocery store.

The museum’s laborers’ dwellings are filled with a wealth of historical items, such as tobacco products, intricately carved pipe heads, pilgrimage pennants, vintage children’s games, and cake and chocolate molds. Younger visitors will be fascinated by the exhibits, while older generations will enjoy a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

The museum also offers various activities and temporary exhibitions on its upper floor. On the first and third Thursday of each month, watch a traditional sweet maker at work, filling the museum with delightful aromas. In addition, you can participate in folk games in the museum’s indoor gardens or join the cozy Mid-winter Festival in December.
