Museum aan de Stroom-MAS-2 - 1

Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) is a cultural gem that should not be missed. This modern and striking museum offers a captivating exploration of the city’s history, art, and maritime heritage.

History

MAS opened its doors in 2011, introducing a fresh perspective on museum experiences. The museum was created with the aim of showcasing Antwerp’s diverse cultural identity and rich history as a global port city.

Designed by the acclaimed Dutch architect Neutelings Riedijk, the building itself is an architectural masterpiece that stands out against the city’s skyline, symbolizing Antwerp’s innovative and vibrant spirit.

Architecture

The MAS building boasts a distinctive design that combines modern elements with references to the city’s maritime past. Its façade showcases striking red sandstone, intricately arranged to resemble the uneven stacks of shipping containers, paying homage to Antwerp’s role as a major port in Europe.

As you ascend through the museum’s levels, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the city, which seem to blend harmoniously with the museum’s panoramic glass windows. This architectural marvel promises an immersive and visually stunning experience for visitors.

Exhibits

The MAS houses an extensive collection of over half a million artifacts, art pieces, and historical objects that span centuries of Antwerp’s history. From ancient artifacts to contemporary artworks, the exhibits are thoughtfully curated to offer a comprehensive understanding of the city’s evolution and global significance.

One of the highlights is the impressive collection of Flemish Masters’ paintings, featuring works by renowned artists such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. The maritime section showcases artifacts from Antwerp’s maritime trade, providing insights into the city’s global connections and economic prowess over the ages.

Top Floor is Free Entrance

The top floor of the MAS offers a panoramic view of Antwerp, allowing visitors to soak in the breathtaking skyline of the city and its iconic landmarks. The best part? Entrance to the top floor is free, making it an ideal spot to enjoy sunset or take stunning photographs.
