The Statue at the Center

The statue depicts Brabo, a mythical Roman soldier who, according to the tale, defeated a giant named Druon Antigoon. As the story goes, Brabo chopped off the giant’s hand and tossed it into the river Scheldt, symbolizing the end of the giant’s oppressive tolls on passing ships.

The name “Antwerp” is said to have originated from “hand werpen,” meaning “hand-throwing” in Dutch, paying tribute to this heroic act.

Grote Markt is located at the heart of historical area of Antwerp, easily reachable by various tram and bus lines from the Antwerp Central Station. It takes 20-30 minute walk from the Antwerp Central Station.
